Description
American white pelican by Gene Putney
This American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) was photographed in Longmont, Colorado, part of its migratory range and one of the pelican's summer breeding grounds, which are scattered across the western United States and Canada. The black feathers at the tips of this adult's large wings are visible only during flight; once resting on the water the bird will appear to be almost completely white, except for its long yellow beak used for scooping up (not carrying) food.
