Burrowing owl chicks by Michael Turco
The diminutive burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia), though broadly listed as a species of least concern due to its wide range, has undergone a population decline in many areas. The presence of humans has broadened its range in Florida, and around golf courses, vacant lots, and similar open spaces near human populations it's not uncommon to find one of their burrows.
