Howling gray wolf by Tammy Wolfe
The call of the wild…the howl of a gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a powerful reminder of nature's raw strength, beauty, and variety. Wolves howl to defend their territory, often in a chorus of pack members, or in social response to howls from other animals (even humans!). Train whistles and sirens also elicit wolf vocalizations, which can carry for six miles. These charismatic canids recognize individual packmates' voices and those of other wolves. Scientists, in turn, can analyze recorded wolf songs to identify unique voices, helpful when monitoring wolf populations.
