Description
Ladybird beetle on a lords and ladies plant
Photograph by Paul Hobson
A ladybird beetle (Coccinellidae) explores a lords and ladies plant (Arum maculatum) in the evening sunlight, perhaps in search of dinner. This brightly colored, beneficial insect deters predators with its foul-tasting secretions while ridding gardens of aphids and other pests. Its seeming invincibility led to a reputation as a protector of crops. In European folklore, ĆĀladybirdĆĀ and ĆĀladybugĆĀ relate to divine protection by the Virgin Mary, thus its distinction as ĆĀthe bug of Our Lady.ĆĀ
