Mandarin duck duo
Photograph by Tim Fitzharris
With feathers in high-contrast colors, clearly defined and verging on sculptural, a Mandarin duck drake ready to mate is a stunning example of nature's artistry. Mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) are sexually dimorphic, which for them means the male puts on his finest feathers during breeding season and the female stays in more practical plumage. But the hen's drab attire is for the bestĀshe'll blend into her surroundings as she tends to the pair's chicks, which she must do alone while the drake molts his fancy feathers.
