Auguste Renoir (1841Ā1919) Oarsmen at Chatou Chatou, a village on the western outskirts of Paris, was a popular resort for many in the vicinity of Paris and attracted visitors from every level of society. Seeking fun and relaxation, vacationers spent their Sundays and holidays boating, swimming, and picnicking along the river. Auguste Renoir, frequenting the boating places along the Seine, started depicting such outings around 1868.
