Louis H. Sullivan (American, 1856Ā1924) Adaptation from ornamental medallion on Schlesinger & Mayer (now Carson Pirie Scott) department store, 1899/1904 Prominent Chicago School architect Louis H. Sullivan (1856Ā1924) brought to his practice a conviction that ornamentation should arise naturallyĀ"organically," as his protégé Frank Lloyd Wright would come to think of itĀfrom a building's overall design. No decoration was stuck on as an afterthought; every detail restated a theme expressed in the structure as a whole. (Sullivan's famous dictum "form ever follows function" was later rephrased by Mies van der Rohe as "form is function.") This design is an adaptation of one of Sullivan's outstanding architectural ornamentations. Combining Art Nouveau complexity with geometric elegance, it epitomizes the Sullivan sensibility. - INDIVIDUAL ITEM RRP £1.99
