Painted bunting
Photograph by Art Wolfe
The migratory painted bunting (Passerina ciris) can be found throughout Central America and the southern United States. Though these finches are considered common, their numbers have been in declineĀtheir vibrant feathers make them a target for illegal trapping, and they face additional pressures as habitat is destroyed. They migrate in flocks, even mixing with indigo buntings, but during breeding season males such as this one will unwaveringly defend territory, claiming a few acres for themselves.
