Though these finches are considered common, their numbers have been in decline—their vibrant feathers make them a target for illegal trapping, and they face additional pressures as habitat is destroyed. They migrate in flocks, even mixing with indigo buntings, but during breeding season males such as this one will unwaveringly defend territory, claiming a few acres for themselves.
