The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) has the widest range of any canid, spread across the Northern Hemisphere from the Tropic of Cancer to the Arctic, at altitudes from sea level to over 14,000 feet, in environments from urban to rural. Its diet is equally broad, including rodents, rabbits, other small mammals, birds, fish, carrion, fruit, plants, and insects. The animal's dense, silky coat has long made it a favorite of the fur trade, but thanks to the fox's adaptability and high reproductive success, its population is not threatened.
