Description

Mark Rothko was central to the development of postwar abstract painting in the United States. He is best known for the luminous works he made in the 1950s and 60s, which often feature soft-edged rectangular forms and broad, thin washes of color. Rothko painted on paper and canvas, often at large scale. He felt that his paintings, big or small, could physically engage the viewer. These extraordinary works invite contemplation and spiritual communion. The National Gallery of Art is the largest public repository of Rothko's art, with 1,100 works on paper and paintings on canvas and panel.
