White-tailed deer fawn and wild lupine, northern Minnesota
A lone white-tailed deer fawn (Odocoileus virginianus) beds down for an afternoon nap amidst a field of wild lupine (Lupinus perennis). If alarmed, the fawn would have its tail up as though waving a tiny white flag, signaling danger may lurk nearby. Mating season lasts from November to early December, and young arrive seven months later. Often born in twos, or sometimes threes, the fawns weigh approximately four to eight pounds each. Their white spots, a form of camouflage, disappear as the fawns are weaned three to four months after birth, but the white of their tails will always remain.
